Observation details
Amazing find by Connor whom we met up with at 7:10 as the fog was coming in and the light was diminishing. Well documented with many photos and heard giving its faint call note distinctly different from Swainson’s or Hermit’s. After we arrived and had views of it in the cypress. It eventually flew down to the road for close views. Bird was olive gray throughout its entire body and tail and had a distinctive blank appearance to its face due to the washed out nature of the cheek and face area, this individual was very white faced. Its short olive tail made it easy to rule out Hermit thrush. The bird also had a very black beady eye that perhaps contrasted more so than other thrushes due to the white face, and had a Stronger yellow lower mandible. Although I have seen Gray Cheeked’s many times before in other states I would’ve thought it’d be a tricky identification in california, with this individual I’d be wrong. Overall a great study and wonderful experience as it crossed on the trail in front of us. Big thanks to connor for giving us prompt notice.
