Sabine's Gull photographed in flight by Curtis A. Marantz on 4 May 2024 over the southern edge of the 279-fathom Bank about 24 kilometers west-southwest of Point San Mateo at 33° 16’ 50.5” N, 117° 49’ 13.2” W, Orange County, California.
Observation details
A single gull seen flying by only at a distance was a bit far to see clearly, but photos show it to have had an incomplete hood, suggestive of a second-spring bird or possibly an adult in transitional plumage. More clearly seen were the narrow wedge of black across the outer primaries contrasting with both the gray coverts and the broad, white wedge across the trailing part of the wing. This bird passed by us at moderate distance while we were along the southern edge of the 279-fathom Bank, about 24 kilometers west-southwest of Point San Mateo (33° 16’ 50.5” N, 117° 49’ 13.2” W).
