Observation details
Edit 051724: upon some confounding evidence of a HETH frequenting the same area later in the day -- albeit with a very minute amount of red in the uppertail -- I've decided to change my observation back to its original identification of a Catharus sp. It's possible that 'my bird' is still around, but will leave it as undecided until it is refound. Found here: (32.281577, -106.756437). I initially thought this might be a SWTH when I first saw the bird in a cottonwood on campus due to its lack of reddish tail. I then went to get better looks at the face, of which the bird was quite obliging. I did not see a hint of buffy coloration at all in the face, nor throughout the body overall. No spectacles, a pale and nondescript eye-ring, a cool grayish coloration throughout from tail to head, and a lack of buffy/brown overtones all solidify a GCTH identification. I was unable to get clear photos of the uppertail, but this bird very clearly had a gray tail -- even in the bright sunlight as it foraged on the ground for 5-6 seconds. May be the 8th state record if accepted, and surprisingly fits well within the tight date window for previous records in NM.
