Observation details
Very probable American three-toed woodpecker. Heard 2 drums, managing to record the second round of slow-to-start, light drumming with tapered ending. Abundant bark flaking in several stands of black spruce and red spruce. Locations of woodpecker foraging via bark flaking were devoid of any heartwood excavation. I still-birded at multiple spots 10 min each, and slowly worked my way through the thick spruce forest with small openings between thick areas. Never laid eyes on the bird whose drum I managed to record, but the area is such that a bird could have been perched 30 feet away and if still and silent could easily be overlooked.
