Observation details
One heard booming while we were stood on the viewpoint in the powerline cut. After 20 mins and no joy with a closer individual we decided to pursue this one bush bashing up the clearing to get closer. We soon discovered there was a track right by the trees the bird was in. Here I got a close sound recording which hopefully turned out but we still couldn't see the bird. It was presumably just perched up in the Douglas Firs but no sign and it's a big bird! So we decided to manoveur upslope onto a rocky outcrop. The light was considerably worse but maybe a different angle on the trees and less steep would help. Still no sign! Until it flushed from the tree and flew 50m, not good. No idea how we couldn't see it, the trees were only 15m in front of us. Anyway, we were lucky as the grouse hadn't gone far and was still booming away from a new tree. We approached cautiously and were lucky to have the bird perched at eye-level largely in the open. Fantastic! Here we watched the bird for 15 mins or slow as it turned and boomed with it's tail spread 6m up a spruce tree, slightly downslope so we were't looking up too much. We approached a bit closer so the bird was perhaps 25m away. Not fully in the open but very satisfying views of a lifer for both of us! After we had our fill we wandered back to the path, the grouse moved back a couple of trees and was no longer in view but could still be heard. We also heard another bird booming in the distance.
