Observation details
1 male in garden first seen about 5:00 p.m. It soon ducked under a row cover and began exploring some broccoli plants. When the row cover was removed, it flew a few yards to a wild hydrangea and then into a berry patch. When followed, it circled back around to the garden, once more ducking into the broccoli patch. After 15 minutes, I removed the row cover again, and it flew a few feet onto a birch log. It was extremely tame, allowing me to approach within 3-4 feet. As it continued to hop around the broccoli bed, I photographed it. Finally it flew up into an overhanging maple, where I lost track of it, but then heard it—seet, seet, seet, seet—over toward a crabapple tree. It was still in the yard at 5:30.
