Observation details
ON PRIVATE PROPERTY. Found during grassland bird survey of B&C Ranch, part of The Nature Conservancy's greater Randall Preserve. I have extensive experience working with this species on both wintering and breeding grounds. The first bird was giving it's distinctive doubled/tripled 'rattly' chip (see recording). tracked it down and got looks at large headed, short tailed sparrow that only made short jerky flights when flushed. I also noted the pale buffy face with eye ring, and an ornately patterned back, though views were obscured by grass. Later I returned to the area to gather more information and found 2 birds calling back and forth (same call type as before), all activity remained in a fairly defined area and I believe this to be a pair on territory. We will be following up in this area in the coming weeks. No songs heard. Very pleased to find them here.
