Observation details
***First documented report for Nova Scotia since 1978, and first in the province with documentation beyond field notes. Near the end of a fairly quiet walk around Markland Estates I heard a single faint, distant, nasal caw. It immediately made me think of Fish Crow and I headed towards the sound, not quite believing I had heard it properly. As I drew closer it called again with the classic nasal "uh-uh" and my disbelief turned into certainty and then immediately to panic as I fumbled for my phone to record it! It was on the west side of Markland Estates near the last house on Thomas Rd. It called often but kept moving around, never closer than 100m away. Alix and I had just been reviewing the field marks for Fish Crow vs American Crow a few days ago (!) and I knew what to look for, but unfortunately this wasn't particularly helpful - though I could convince myself that in flight the "hand" was a smidgen more pointed than AMCR, overall if it hadn't been calling I would not have realized it wasn't an AMCR. There were no signs of moult in the wing. Within 5 minutes of confirming the ID, the crow took off and circled twice over all of Markland before departing to the east (though it quickly disappeared behind the trees so any course adjustments wouldn't have been visible). Tried to re-find it by searching the Forchu/Overton area (while others searched elsewhere) for 2.5h without success.
