Neotropic Cormorant “grunting” not quite drowned out by the noisy calls of Gull-Bill Terns
Observation details
Flocks of cormorants assembled on two rock islands in pond. Determined to be Neotropic as opposed to Double-Crested based on: Yellow gular at rear of bill all below eye; gular outlined with white at rear of triangular shaped yellow patch; tails of birds flying to reposition themselves in flock wedge-shaped, not squared off and approximately as long as head/neck; bills not as long and heavy as would be expected on Double-Crested. There were groups of two's and three's swimming out in the pond apart from the flocks that possibly had the bigger bills of Double-Crested but they were too distant to see clearly. While almost drowned out by the noisy Gull-Billed Terns, the Cormorants could be heard “grunting.”
