Observation details
Adult gull in alternate plumage. It stood out among the small group of California gulls also present: noticeably larger; somewhat darker mantle (approx. western gull shade); yellowish legs; pale iris; and, bright yellow, relatively straight bill with a broad, red smudge at the tip. No westerns were present but the impression was a bit smaller than expected for that species. The small gull flock (also including a ring-billed at one point) departed awhile later as the tide came in. Update (5/18): Some feedback received that this appears to simply be a relatively large Cal gull.
