Observation details
When I heard this bird singing from high in a cottonwood just west of N Tu-Su Lane, I thought it was either a Yellow Warbler that forgot the ending to its song or an American Redstart. Merlin thought American Redstart and when I finally glimpsed it, I concurred - I saw the tail flared in typical American Redstart fashion, dark-tipped with a broad yellow base to the outer tail feathers. I got glimpses of the face, but never the breast or back. Since this bird was singing and yellow-plumaged, I deduced it was a second-year male.
