Observation details
Caracara with pale based primaries, post ocular eye-line and Accipiter like flight pattern. Probably the same YHCA that has been hanging around Oleta State Park and the Haulover area in Dade county for almost 2 years now. Anyways, as the story goes I was talking to Mitchell Harris via cell phone and we were discussing the end of spring migration as well as rarities such as West Indian vagrants that we could possibly see and ironically Mitchell mentions Yellow-headed Caracara and within about 10 minutes of that comment I see a southbound raptor emerge from the blinding morning light that catches my peripheral vision as I am gazing out to the southeast staring away from the glare. My initial quick assessment from being distracted through cell phone conversation was, oh it’s just an Osprey and I thought to myself why does that Osprey look like a Caracara? “WTF” So after telling Mitchell that I had something unusual, I set the phone down, capped off several rounds, reviewed the images and then came to the conclusion through identifiable field marks that the specie had revealed its true identity YHCA and that’s when another “WTF”moment ensued. So after suffering from a short-term case of severe shell-shock, I still remain Dazed and Confused…LZ
