Observation details
A medium-sized passerine with heavy grayish bill and overall brownish, orange-red coloration. Most brownish on the wings and approaching a yellowish green on its lower belly. The head and breast were the reddest. I think this color pattern suggest a younger male not yet in full breeding plumage. I was first alerted to the bird because I heard a two note call which immediately made me think of Summer Tanager but at first I could not locate the bird. I then found the bird foraging quietly in a maples at the northwestern side of the pond. It then flew to the northeast side, where I was able to get some terrible pictures and do a quick sketch. In flight, the bird was plump, with a medium length tail and broad rounded wings. I watched and heard the bird from about 7:30 AM to 7:45 AM when I had to return back home. I hope to go back later. This bird lacked the black wings and black tail of a Scarlet Tanager and had a more streamlined body. The bird was really hard to see while it was foraging in the leaves, especially because the maples have clusters of reddish flowers that match the hue of the bird! It would just disappear in the canopy, but it called often and sometimes flew out into the open, as if flycatching. So exciting--This is a bird I never thought I would add to my patch!
