Observation details
(40.0894684, -75.4553538) Last night Steve G sent me pics of an interesting Catharus that had a lot of yellow in the mandible, looked pot-bellied, and had reddish tones in the wing / tail. This morning Jeff and I arrived pre-dawn and quickly located the bird calling and then singing. Diagnostic audio recorded, but even still the bird seemed quite different structurally than a GCTH, showing a short tailed, pot-bellied look more similar to a HETH than a GCTH or SWTH. Unfortunately in MontCo, a mere 70m from the ChesCo border. This species is probably fairly regular in the eastern half of the state in the latter part of May and as birders become more familiar with the species, detection rates should increase. Despite good recordings in the ivory school app, it wouldn’t call it!
