Observation details
*Rare, incredibly cool sighting. We lingered until dusk, when the bird left its perch and started hunting insects in a small area of the esplanade. She would sally about for insects, looking like a gigantic bat, and then either perch on the ground or up in one of the trees. In flight the wings appeared long and pointed, and the flight was very buoyant and fluttery. On the ground we could see the large eye wide open, and it was constantly swiveling its head up and down, looking for insects. When we left at 8:45 we had lost it up in a tree, but we had frequently lost it before whenever it landed out of view.
