Observation details
Shortly after I arrived I heard a bird singing in a tall, leafy tree near the start of Kestrel trail that I initially thought was a Robin, but it didn’t sound right. The tempo was too slow; most phrases contained 2 notes instead of the usual 3 (or 4) that a Robin uses. My biggest clue that something was wrong is that Merlin failed to identify the bird. Merlin ALWAYS gets the American Robin. I never did see the bird, even though I was standing next to its tree. After I got home, I uploaded my recordings to BirdNET. One recording had just the mystery bird. The second recording captured the song of a nearby Common Yellowthroat in addition to the mystery bird. In both cases, BirdNET assigned a 100% score to Summer Tanager; a 100% score is not the same as 100% probability, but it's as good as it gets. The dawn song of Summer Tanager is a close match to my recordings. NOTE: BirdNET is not the same as Merlin. The two programs were developed by different teams with different objectives. IMO BirdNET is much more reliable than Merlin.
