Observation details
Sunrise at 5:53 AM. I had my alarm set for 5:50, but at 5:33, I was woken up (in my room at the Garden Inn) by a big wave of parrot noise, surely from big groups of birds either leaving the roost or just waking up and moving around. As quickly as I could, I went outside to check it out and started this list. It was clear that my conservative estimate of 100 Red-crowned last night was too low, as was my estimate of 110 Mitred. This morning it was easier to see larger numbers of parrots, as they moved around less, primarily staying put in sycamores along the street rather than moving around in pre-roost staging and feeding. This morning I saw some of them feeding on sycamore pods. Some also gathered in a large magnolia along the west side of Rosemead Boulevard, maybe eating something there. I also saw some allopreening. Though it was easier to get higher counts this morning, it was harder to get good views of individual birds and sort through the flock, as it was a bit darker this morning and the birds stayed behind cover more. Almost all of the Amazona parrots, and most of the Mitred Parakeets, were gone by the time I ended this checklist. Both the parrots and parakeets seemed to be flying off primarily to the north, northeast, and northwest.
