Observation details
A small Empidonax flycatcher. Very plain, with a thin but distinct eye ring. It was feeding in the low brush and honeysuckle, in the bottom of the grown-over pond when I first became aware of it. It responded immediately when I played back the Alder call. Merlin refused to identify the oft-repeated whistled chewy!…..chewy! call that it is making. Sibley includes this call, but Merlin refused to identify it, even though I could hear it quite clearly. Recording attached. Note that the chewy! call appears as a vague cursive lower-case letter u, in the sonogram. I got photos of possibly the same bird, on Saturday morning, that completely ignored my playback of a Willow call.
