Observation details
Regular low density visitor to the Delaware River in the winter months, but rare to find outside of the winter season. According to eBird there are currently no accepted records of Iceland Gull in New Castle County for the month of May. Possibly historical records exist and definitely this is not the first one to linger into spring. Young bird with mostly white plumage overall with white flight feathers. This bird was slightly smaller then the Herring Gulls in the flock. First seen at 12:05pm as it worked it’s way up the stone break wall in the middle of the river. The bird stayed for about ten minutes before flying southeast into New Jersey waters at the top of the Delaware Bay. Another one was reported about thirty miles to the south of this location about an hour later in the day. Likely a different individual because of the distance and timing.
