Observation details
Male in high breeding plumage, singing its lungs out, viewed at very close distance for several minutes. Excellent lighting set the chestnut cap apart from the uniformly brown back, and illuminated other features like the dark eye line, pink legs, and long, pointed beak held wide open while in song. Our primary purpose of the visit to Conemaugh Dam this morning was to see if we get visual confirmation of this species where Merlin reported it singing repeatedly last Saturday morning while we were there on the migration count. Merlin did likewise upon our arrival today, in exactly the same spot on the curve below the bridge across the river next to the Bow Ridge Tunnel. And today more than a little patience paid off with excellent views of the songster.
