Observation details
Flagged as rare; small and robust falcon with very dark plumage. Perched in dead ash trees in backyard, being mobbed consistently by AMRO, RWBL, BLJA, and AMCR; these eventually drove the MERL away. Female-type bird with dark, sepia brown upperparts, black tail with narrow pale bands, and warm buffy underparts, streaked heavily with blackish-brown. Face pattern indistinct, with short, pale eyebrow, blurry dark eyeline, and weak “mustache” streak. Much darker and more sturdily-built than AMKE—block head was obvious and in flight, broad-based and sharply-pointed wings and short, clean squared-off tail were especially apparent.
