Observation details
This bird was first observed by my colleague Shin Mun Cheol at around 7:09 am. (eBird shows me as the first observer, but that's because I started the checklist earlier in the day). I first observed this bird around 7:31 am. When I first observed this bird, I could not make an accurate identification. In the book I have, 'A Field Guide to the Birds of Korea', there was no bird that looked exactly like this bird. It looked most similar to the Black Redstart in that it did not have white spots on its wings. However, the head and chest color looked very different from the pictures in the field guide book. So I wondered if it was an immature Black Redstart. When I went around to another point and returned to the spot where I observed, many other observers were there. One of the observers (who was introduced as Soyoung Sung) sent the photo to Dr. Nial Moores, a famous bird researcher in Korea, and informed him that he identified it as a Common Redstart. He also informed me that this bird was an unrecorded Korean species.
