Observation details
Heard flying over. One call recorded. My experience was that I heard the bird in front of me distantly, then quite loudly overhead twice and the last call was in the other direction (i.e. the bird has passed over me). They were loud, even, "demonic" screeches, rising slightly. All sounded basically the same as the one in the recording, though that one was the most distant and of course picked up poorly on my phone. This is very typical of my experiences with Barn Owl while living in Los Angeles. You would hear them screeching overhead occasionally, out of nowhere. I was curious about whether any juvenile owls of other species call like this, but can't find any calls that really match. At this location pretty much the only options for something as loud as this are Barred or Great Horned. Both seem like they don't fit the timbre very well upon comparison. Additionally, I have trouble imagining a begging juvenile calling in flight as it soared over town. They would be in a nest tree or nearby and the sound would have repeatedly localized to the same location.
