Observation details
Flying in to roost from various directions, maybe mostly from the north and east? I saw my first couple Red-crowned fly in, along with a likely Lilac-crowned, around 7:10, while I was tracking down the big parakeet flock. As I watched the parakeets, the Red-crowned Parrots seemed to start arriving in earnest around 7:20 PM, peaking around 7:35 or 7:40 PM, and dying down by 7:50 PM. Sunset was 7:44 PM. A few more were still flying in as I ended this list around 8:10 PM. The parrots first flew in and joined the Mitred Parakeets in palms and sycamores along Rosemead between Sereno and Pentland. Eventually, most of the parrots shifted southward and seemed to be settling in sycamores along Rosemead south of Pentland and north of the railroad overpass. I got some of my best views as they staged on wires along Pentland between Rosemead and Sultana. They were feeding on a couple fruiting trees here (including maybe a loquat tree?)—each parrot would fly in, grab a fruit, then fly to a nearby wire and eat the fruit, manipulating the fruit with its foot while eating, as shown in the first two photos below. I think this conservative estimate of 100 is probably low, but it was hard to see many birds at a time as they settled into the trees, so I couldn't be sure how much the same birds were moving around. I think 150 might be a more accurate estimate.
