Observation details
On three occasions, I got views of a single apparent Lilac-crowned among the Red-crowned. Once in a tall tree at Pentland and Sultana, once in street trees with a few Red-crowned near the Yellow-headed, and once on the wires along Pentland. Darker reddish-maroon forecrown, smaller in extent than the red forecrown of Red-crowned. I also got the impression that the eye was darker than on Red-crowned, possibly because there was less of a pale eye-ring, as opposed to the eye color itself. There could have been multiple Lilac-crowned, but I only saw one at a time. Not sure how to conclusively eliminate Red-crowned x Lilac-crowned (hybrid), but I think what I saw looked consistent with Lilac-crowned. I couldn't tell whether I was hearing any Lilac-crowned calling among all the Red-crowned. These photos are from each of my three sightings in chronological order. The last bird seems to have a somewhat larger area of red on the forehead, so maybe a hybrid? But I think the first two, at least, seem fine for Lilac-crowned. Opinions welcome.
