Observation details
Summer adult. Briefly circled at height above Graham Ave, then headed East over the water towards Mackinac Island. Initially thought Bonapartes Gull due to dark hood, but larger size and soaring behavior was abnormal. As the bird circled into better sunlight, the narrow white eye crescents and a thick, deep red bill became obvious. Wingtips all black, with extensive black on the underside of the primaries. Compared to Franklin’s Gull, this individual lacked a mostly white underwing pattern. Documentation photos included.
