Observation details
Continuing bird found this morning by Jake. Dark back with white wingbars, bright yellow throat. Photos to follow. [Additional comments from Tom] Found by Jake "Avo Stilt" (I don't know what his last name is) at 34.1605370, -117.8251330 Because it is the weekend, parking was somewhat limited in this canyon forest hiking area. I parked approximately 200 yards downhill from where the bird was, but others got parking spaces a little bit closer. Somebody trying for this bird tomorrow, Monday, might have an easier time parking. This bird was a small American wood warbler that was similar to a Northern Parula. Its dorsal surfaces were mostly a dull blue gray color with the only outstanding feature being two small white wing bars that were not parallel to each other (the Sibley guide shows these two small white wing bars as being parallel but distant from each other, but to me they look like they were at a 45° angle to each other). I never saw the green mantle that this bird is supposed to have, because I was observing it from a 45° infero-lateral view. In general, as far as I know, most--if not everybody--only saw this bird as it was at least 15 feet, or higher, up in various trees including sycamores, oaks and pines. The best way to find this bird is to know what its song sounds like and track it down by voice. Most of the ventral surface was light colored with the anterior portion being yellow, and the posterior portion being white. I could see that halfway the length of the yellow on the throat/breast, there was a darker orangish yellow band or splotch that was poorly defined. I don't know if this was a feature of the light conditions or what the bird actually would look like in direct sunlight. The under-surface of the bill was pale. The bill appeared to be rather long, and sharp. Rather than the white eye arcs of a Northern Parula, this bird had no white around the eyes at all, instead, having a narrow black band horizontally across the eyes that was distinct from the rest of the gray on the face and mantle. The shape and extent of this black across the eyes to me did not match the Sibley guide.
