Observation details
*RARE. One of only a few spring records in the northeast and possibly a county first for the species? Bird was feeding in oaks and associating with a male BAWW. Initially I was thinking the BAWW was singing an abberant song; sounded like a couple buzzy BTNW notes mixed with BAWW squeaky notes. As soon as I confirmed the BAWW was not making the noises, a male TOWA popped into view. Striking contrast between black auriculars and bright yellow face. Obviously more black on the wings, flanks and throat with a bright yellow wash under the dark throat patch. Truly stunning bird. I was able to run back inside, gra my phone and camera and document before the small group of migrants moved down the road.
