Observation details
Adult male. First spotted the bird fly into the upper canopy of a tree. I saw its dark back, white rump, black wings and tail, and also noted white markings on its wings common to this species of grosbeak. The bird was either chasing or being chased by two Scrub-Jays. There was also possibly a Black-headed Grosbeak nearby, singing (although could have been the rose-breasted singing—haven’t checked to see which song I was hearing). Some kind of grosbeak was singing, anyway. The bird turned around and I saw its large pink bill, white belly and rose-colored chest that tapered down into a point. This viewing only lasted a few seconds. The bird then flew north and down into the foliage where I could hear a grosbeak still singing, as well as a sharp, squeaky iiiiiiik, louder than a black-headed, like shoes squeaking on a gym floor. I have a recording of that though there are sounds of the creek and the other grosbeak/various birds over the top of that, as well as some footsteps (either way, I don't think the recording will help much in the way of evidence--at least it was a male, so no doubt visually). This was at the second bridge, north side of the trail. Kept hoping the bird would pop back out for a photo op. Nope. I’ll add the recording.
