Observation details
A plain winged vireo, similar in body plan and markings to a WAVI, but notably larger, with a much more strongly pattered face, and more brightly colored upperparts. Dark gray cap accented below by a black line, long white supercillium bordered below by a long thick black eyeline, thicker btw bill and eye than behind the eye, that divided the face neatly into upper and lower halves. The lower face was pale olive, the upperparts were fairly bright green-olive, but the back was difficult to see as it stayed mostly above; the unmarked wing panel appeared gray, showing just a hint of olive under the dark lighting; the underparts were white and unmarked from chin through undertail coverts (no obvious yellow or olive visible). The wings were long and when perched and extended to the tips of its long undertail coverts; the undertail coverts extended over nearly half the tail’s length, generating a short tailed appearance. Bill was longish and stout in typical fashion among the plain-winged vireos, the upper mandible was horn colored and darker overall than the lower mandible that was paler basal half (but not obviously flesh-colored). The iris appeared brownish in most views, but showed a dull reddish tint in the best lighting. Silent throughout the hour plus I was present. It moved throughout a cluster of carrotwood trees during my observation, but went missing at times, and was in these same trees when relocated.
