Observation details
Reliable at Cromwell, but this one was in a new spot (for me). Walking east on the narrow cedar-lined trail above the lime kiln, there's a snag just before the trail opens up into the last (east) field, and the bird was teed up there. It seemed strangely motionless, only looking around twice over the span of a few minutes (and not hawking, preening, etc.). Then a Coop came blasting out of the woods under the bird, and I realized that the flycatcher had been monitoring the hawk's activities and waiting for it to leave.
