Harlequin Duck on left, two Bufflehead on right.
Observation details
Rare. Smallish, rounded, but solid waterfowl. Nascent white crescent at base of stubby bill, followed by white dot and white slash behind eye on otherwise dark head. Wings all dark save for narrow white line at join with body (this plumage seems to fit with a first summer male). Bird raced east along shore at east beach and disappeared, but reappeared a couple minutes later racing west and vanishing around the tip, only to reappear a bit later circling the choppy water at the end of the point. Finally settled down with two bufflehead there and remained in place until (and presumably after) my departure at 11:45am. Record photos obtained. Plumage matches bird at Point Petre on January 29 2024 (see https://ebird.org/checklist/S160118471), so possibly an individual over-wintering on PEC South Shore. However, somewhat frantic initial behaviour alternatively suggests a migratory bird on the move.
