Observation details
This bird was originally reported as a golden eagle. After feedback there is some skepticism so we are changing the observation to diurnal raptor sp. Below is the original description and photos for the observation. We only had a few seconds for the observation, but CH managed to grab a photo as it flew over. It was apparent from the birds hefty proportions that it was an interesting eagle, but most identification was from the photo afterwards as it was soaring quite high. A large raptor with no white seen underneath. Glided overhead from northeast to southwest with little dihedral and no rocking. Broad wings with the projecting secondaries creating an “S” shape on the trailing edge of the wing. Flight feathers were a little lighter than the rest of the underwing. The secondaries have a trailing bulge. Only a few full-length feathers in the tail. From the photo it appears (to some observers) that there may be a hint of a golden nape and banding/marbling in the flight feathers. The head and neck appear shorter (less than half the length of the tail) and with a smaller bill than Bald Eagle. Observed by WS, KJ, RL, and CH.
