Observation details
Three fluffy juveniles in one shot, at least 2 adults, and two additional juveniles seen in flight. My camera struggled with the birds in flight and was generally too slow to focus. I suspect that there is a second nest as the two youngsters in flight seemed older than the 3 fluffy ones in the shot below which I suspect are not yet flight-capable. I saw males flying between 4 major reed beds, but believe the nests are essentially where they were when we located them a couple of years ago. In reading more about the species I see that it is common for Least Bitterns to nest in close proximity with Boat-tailed Grackles, as is happening here, as they provide some protection against predators. These 3 fluffy youngsters showed no anxiety as the grackles flew in and out of the reeds around them, at times coming quite close.
