Observation details
Freak nocturnal migration flyover. Was walking back to my apartment at 12:10am when I heard the squawk-y calls of these Elegant Terns flying over. I didn't recognize them and so luckily took a quick recording. I then saw the V-shaped flock flying northwest over Escondido Village in the direction of Hoover Tower, underlit by the lights of campus. This was the third consecutive night of large migratory movements. Interestingly, it was also concurrent with the largest geomagnetic storm in 20 years- no clue if that's what drove these birds away from the coast. I also wonder about the path these birds took that strayed them from the coast. Anyway, the first campus record and one of very few away from the immediate bayshore in the county.
