Observation details
Species seen recently in White Rock. This Sparrow was hanging out among the many Chipping Sparrows on the grassy slope north of the pond. Note the dark crown and bold outlines of the cheek spot, also the gray nape collar band, which apparently Merlin favored as a better match to Clay-Colored Sparrow than the runner-up Brewer's Sparrow. I'm inclined to agree, as the Merlin exemplars for Brewer's Sparrows had either lighter crowns, thinner outlines around the cheek spot, brown instead of gray nape collar bands, or (in the adult Timberline Brewer's Sparrow) darker and bolder outlines around the cheek spot. Also note the brown splotch on the sides of its upper breast, which Sibley's Guide displays for the Clay-Colored Sparrow. Also note the white central crown stripe, which iBird Pro and Sibley's Guide mention as characteristic of Clay-Colored and not Brewer's. Also note this and all the birds at Ashley Pond were a little disheveled, as we'd just had a hail storm that blanketed the ground. Please see photos.
