Observation details
Awesome!!! Photos, recording, and a video. I kept hearing what I thought was a peacock throughout the early morning, but it sounded off, and seemed to be coming from the river which really perplexed me. As I kayaked up the river, I stopped at a sandbar to scope, and spotted this loon! It was calling, giving a wail call I wasn’t super familiar with, and solved the peacock puzzle. Still in basic plumage (sadly), but an excellent bird for Yakima!! Right around here (46.7220810, -119.9726100). I was taking digiscopes and getting ready to get back in the boat and (hopefully) photograph the loon, but it dove. I waited over 30 minutes and it did not come up! I never saw or heard it again, despite looking extensively. I honestly wonder if it died while diving?? Seems ridiculous, either that or it disappeared incredibly effectively. Either way, a great experience, and a rare county bird!
