Observation details
Many characteristics of this silent bird would be good for Least or Dusky. Other experts looking at this bird thought it looked good for Dusky. Instructive for me to go through the C-T Lee checklist and try to reason it out. Characteristics that look good for Dusky but not for Least are: (1) bill length is not short, unlike Least; (2) wingbar contrast is medium (light gray wingbars on medium gray back), not strong contrast as in Least; and (3) upper to underpart contrast is not strong (crown/nape/mantle look nearly the same gray as chest, though throat is lighter), unlike strong contrast in Least. One characteristic that might look better for Least than for Dusky is wing panel contrast (comparing pale edges of secondaries to edges of primaries, this looks medium – ok for Dusky- to strong – better for Least). On balance, calling this Dusky.
