Very small bird floating on lake surface with head tucked into back and wing feathers. Bill not visible, and neck not visible due to posture. As shown in accompanying photos, head dark slate color on top from what appears to be base of bill down along the nape and as far down as is visible. Dark head color bordered by rufous-red from just behind the eye, down both sides of the head and neck. Face dark with narrow white arc above the eye. Throat white. Back and wings mottled with dark feathers with light tan borders. Chest and belly to the water line whitish with gray mottling. Distinguished from Wilson’s Phalarope (also present across the lake) by dark head, nape, and neck, rufous-red stripes going down sides of neck, eye arks, and darker back/wing color and pattern.
