Observation details
At rest standing on a piece of washed up drift wood until two common mergs that were working the shoreline like puddle ducks got too close and drove it off a little ways. Long legs, long thick bill. Dark overall with heavily streaked cheek and neck plus intricately speckled back which seems to separate it nicely from the more expected pale backed western subspecies. A few distant pics taken from the playground. The sliding board has a roof at the top which comes in handy in the rain.
