Observation details
Perhaps an oddly bizarre occurrence. A day with myself Terry, Brian, Ben & Lauren that was spent clearing net rides at Longham Lakes for the upcoming season. After I broke one of Brian's rakes we decided to hang back for an extra 30 mins to see if we could catch an early Nightjar. Just before we packed up myself and Terry picked up a distant call to the South which I was convinced was a Black-crowned Night Heron. So I turned on Merlin while the others didn't get the hint to be quiet! Sure enough the next time it called it was right over the top of us despite the fact it had now almost gone 10 and it was effectively pitch black. One of us did actually have a thermal imager on them but was far too busy chatting to think about using it to see the bird. It called again distantly heading north towards the main lakes as we were situated in a private area of the site just to the south of the main lakes and that was that. It is the first time I had heard one since my trip to Menorca way before COVID. It's a weird one for me as I heard a new bird for me in the UK but equally didn't see it. Either way an intriguing record! (I will try and figure out how to attach the sound recording from Merlin)
