Observation details
Very special bird this morning. A melanistic male Evening Grosbeak. Melanism is the result of a defect gene. The result being overproduction of melatonin. The black pigment is taking over and gives the bird a very different look. In this case, i have included a normal bird for comparison. Note the overall black dominance. Undertailed coverts (Utc)are dark black and should be bright yellow. Yellow supercilium is all black and invisible. Secondaries that should be bright white are black or dull white with black margin. Beak is greyish instead of being olive for this time of the year.Unique bird with a very special look.
