Media notes
bird #1 on right, showing wingtip differences from common tern on the left: thinner shape, thinner dark trailing edge on underside, upperside without molt contrast.
Observation details
Up to six possible, only including those I feel most confident about. Painfully identified after the fact from photographs of one of the numerous flocks of common terns in flight (300+ in this one). Thinner bodied, chest heavy build, small round head with shorter reddish bill. Wingtips thinner with no molt contrast and thinner, slightly longer dark trailing edge on underside of primaries. I believe the more extensive white on the face in some is mostly due to glare, as this variation is also seen in many COTE in these photos based on angle. I cannot make these common terns based on consistent shape differences.
