Observation details
Perhaps. Putting as this species so someone with a scope or real camera might come out and check, they’re too far out for binoculars. In the E half there were three phalaropes with white stripes on top of their heads (the Wilson’s) and one that always seemed to have a dark head no matter how it turned and was slightly smaller (I presume a red-necked). Its body also seemed overall darker than the Wilson’s, on whom I could sometimes pick up some pale rosy on the neck contrasting with the dark stripe down the side of the neck, and whiter flanks under the wings. My digibins probably won’t show the needed detail, but I’ll check. I wonder if this accounts for the group of 2+1 phalaropes (WIPH + RNPH) that were only 7 mi S at Avra valley WTP yesterday and gone today? Edit: I see Carol H visited later and also reported this same lineup, nice! (And thanks!) I’ve attached my two “best” (very crappy) photos, they show a few pixels of white under the throat on an otherwise dark neck and slightly smaller size.
