Observation details
First noted this yellow-bellied kingbird in flight along the west side park fence line as I was driving to the point parking lot. Immediately noted the very dark coal gray head/breast and contrasting white chin which seemed to point to Cassin's. I parked and returned to the area for much better looks at this individual while it perched in wait for passing insects. Yellow-bellied kingbird with very dark coal gray cast to head, back, and breast. Distinct contrasting bright white chin, brown-gray upperparts, brown wings and blackish tail. Structurally a bit smaller than other kingbirds like Western. Initially foraging along the west side of the park, then around the point parking lot, and finally did a circuit of the point. This kingbird had a combative attitude with all tyrant flycatchers in the area. Viewed driving Eastern Phoebe and Vermilion Flycatcher off posts. Last seen flying over the southwest finger of the point heading west over the lake. Early on, I sent out a quick note on this bird to our rare bird alert text group. Bryan, Jane, and Byron were able to follow up on this one with success. Photo'd.
