Observation details
Life bird! Male. I was beginning to wonder if I would ever see this declining species. Recording and photos. It took quite a while to re-find this bird which was originally reported by Paul Pisano and his group this morning. I arrived around 11:00am and had given up and was walking back toward my car when I heard the classic golden-winged song at 1:58pm. I managed a recording, but did not see the bird. I continued to hold out hope, and eventually waited around with three other birders for a while. I was saying the words “Okay, I’m going to head out” to the others but was interrupted right at that moment by another golden-winged song. We heard the song several more times after that and eventually we all got eyes on the bird just after 3:30pm. The bird hung out about 20 feet or so off the ground and was doing some gleaning and flycatching. It made a few different types of vocalizations, mostly the classic golden-winged song, but also a blue-winged type call on one occasion. I’m very glad the bird jumped in to prevent me from leaving at both of the moments mentioned above. What a bird, and what a sense of timing!
