Observation details
*Very rare, but proven annual presence at Nickerson during this time. One at the water’s edge near east colony when I arrived, and another high up the beach at west colony; both subadults. Plumage of these two not as distinct from one another as I thought in the field, but I believe other folks were on the east colony bird when we discovered the one at west colony. On my final check of east colony, I also saw a first cycle bird. Two other encounters with subadult Arctics on the beach at west colony could potentially mean there were as many as five birds encountered, but leaving it at three to allow for the possibility of some shuffling. That I didn’t pick out any of the more juvenile-like first cycle birds suggests that I overlooked them. Photos of each
