Observation details
Exact count was obtained from a 2-hour Whimbrel Roost Count Survey from 6 – 8 PM. Observations were made from an anchored boat positioned between Little Tybee (Beach Hammock) and the south end of Williamson Island, which is a known night roost sight for Whimbrels. Four observers monitored the incoming Whimbrels and recorded the exact number of Whimbrels in each group as they flew in, along with the time the group arrived and their incoming flight direction. Over the 2-hour period, most Whimbrels arrived in groups of 10 – 30, but several larger groups were also observed. After the survey was completed, the recorded counts were totaled. We were thrilled to have observed a total of 1,472 Whimbrels flying into the night roost on Williamson Island. This exceeds last year’s roost count of 1,118 Whimbrels, which was obtained on 5/4/23. Photos attached to illustrate the groups of Whimbrel flying in. Distant photos of Whimbrel that had arrived and settled on the night roost are also included.
