Observation details
Seen from coordinates: 32.4414, -99.69391, looking to the southeast. Found this morning by local photographer Gary Hartley a little before 10:00 am if I understand correctly. Bird was perched in a mesquite snag above the main (eastern most) lake, sometimes called Zoo Lake, along the southwestern edge of the zoo boundary. We were joined by two photographers when we first saw it. William Mince and Keith Kitten. Jayton Carroll soon joined us followed by Linda Houser. I understand that Brad Banner relocated it sometime around 12:30 pm. The following was noted: Small head on long skinny neck, long slender bill, long tail narrowest at the base, buffy tip to the end of the tail. Female/immature had black body, tan head and upper breast contrasting sharply with black lower breast and belly, limited white in wing coverts suggestive of immature bird rather than adult female. Flew at 11:13 am to a distant snag to the north/northwest, giving us even closer looks as it flew by. Photos courtesy of Keith Kitten. Used with permission.
