Observation details
Incredible find this morning by Chuck Weber! Gorgeous ducks with unique tan bodies, white cheek and bright red base of bill. Photos. I am by no means an expert on this species, but I think this is likely a male/female pair. One duck is a bit smaller, with a slightly shorter tail, and with less extensive red in the bill. We observed the birds at length - there are no bands on their legs and they flew perfectly around the cells. There are no game farms in the immediate Belle Glade area and in my 10 years birding this county, there have never been exotic waterfowl observed in the area. The remote location and over a week of stiff east winds, which brought other Caribbean vagrants to South Florida, make me confident that these birds are natural vagrants. The field with the pintails will likely be inaccessible Monday - Saturday. Please respect the requests of the farm owners and the surrounding private properties. There are MANY no trespassing areas around.
